Novacek’s Border Crossings Receives National Recognition from Writer’s Digest

bcwritersdigestfirstplacelogo(Detroit, Mich.) – Detroit publisher, Ten 21 Press’ debut book, Border Crossings: Coming of Age in the Czech Resistance, has won some more national recognition.The 21st Annual Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Awards contest awards has named the book First Place Winner in the Life Stories category of its 2013 contest.

9780985415105-JacketGray_novacek.inddBorder Crossings: Coming of Age in the Czech Resistance is Charles Novacek’s memoir, about his experiences during World War II and the Cold War. He fought against the Nazis at age 11 and narrowly avoided execution by a Soviet firing squad at 20.

At 28, he immigrated to the U.S., and became a successful engineer in Detroit. During his retirement years he fulfilled a lifelong dream of becoming an artist and author. He earned a master’s degree in painting at the age of 65 and finished writing the memoir of his incredible life story 14 years later.

Novacek’s widow, Sandra Novacek, spent several years after his 2007 death seeking a publisher for the book. Unable to secure a deal, she formed her own publishing company and made Charles’ dream of becoming a published author come true.

Since its release in late 2012, Novacek’s Border Crossings has been a finalist and/or winner in 14 independent book awards contests.The book awards include a Gold Medal for Memoir in the 2012 Midwest Book Awards, Bronze Medal for World History in the 2012 Independent Book Awards (IPPY), First Place for History in the 2013 National Indie Excellence Awards, Honorable Mention for Memoir for the 2012 Foreword Reviews Book of the Year Awards, Honorable Mention for Memoir in the 2013 Eric Hoffer Awards and Second Place for History in the Reader Views 2012 Literary Awards.

  1. This is fabulous news! Charles must be beaming with pride. Sandy, you have seen to it that his dream to be published came true.

    I knew from the first that this was a winner! Now I am waiting for the movie version to be announced.
